Al Qudra Lakes is a man-made oasis in the heart of the Dubai desert, where visitors can come to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature.  The area is also a popular destination for birdwatching, nature walks, and wildlife photography, where photographers can capture the beauty and diversity of the local flora and fauna.
The Al Qudra Lakes were created in 2012 as part of a project aimed at transforming the desert landscape into a thriving oasis. The project involved the construction of a series of lakes and waterways, which were fed by treated sewage water from the city of Dubai. The water was purified and filtered before being released into the lakes, ensuring that the ecosystem remained healthy and sustainable. The lakes quickly became a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, with many flocking to the area to enjoy the serene waters and stunning desert views. To accommodate the influx of visitors, a number of amenities were built, including picnic areas, walking trails, and cycling paths.
Where to go?
1- Expo-Lake: This spot is perfect for witnessing the stunning sight of Oryx during sunrise. The dirt-road leading to the lake is easily accessible with a 2WD vehicle. Although the lake itself is smaller compared to others, it provides an excellent chance to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
2- Al Qudra Lakes: To access this area, take the entrance just after the gas station at the roundabout. During winter, it transforms into a birdwatcher's paradise, attracting various bird species. Even during summer, the lake remains relatively quiet, making it a common sighting spot for graceful gazelles as they come to quench their thirst.
3- Lakeside Exploration: In winter, when the weather is cooler, you can park your vehicle near the lakes and embark on a delightful walk through the dunes. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for gazelles, and if you're lucky, you might spot the elusive desert hare too.
4- Flamingo and Love Lake: This lakes complex is undoubtedly the largest in the area, but as a result, it tends to be more crowded with visitors. For a more tranquil experience, it is recommended to explore this area on foot.
If you have a 4WD vehicle, you can venture through the dunes, but walking allows you to take in the beauty of the surroundings at a relaxed pace.
What to see and photograph?
The diversity of bird species at Al Qudra Lakes is truly remarkable. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded here, making it one of the top birdwatching destinations in the region. Some of the most commonly sighted species include the Greater Flamingo, the White-tailed Lapwing, the Sandgrouse, the Hoopoe, and the endangered Houbara bustard.

The Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve, located adjacent to the Al Qudra Lakes, was established in 2017. The reserve spans over 10% of Dubai's total land area, making it the largest conservation area in the UAE. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species, such as the Arabian Oryx and the Gordon's Wildcat.
